Background

A
  • In January 1929, the All India Muslim League, Met in Dheli, where Jinnah presented his 14 points.
  • In them he stated “… I know scheme for the Constitution of the government of India will be acceptable unless all the following basic principles are given affect to.”

This preceded the points which were to act as the basic Muslim demands till the creation of Pakistan.

  • Despite there being many Muslim factions, al of them united and agreed that these terms should be the basis of any further discussions.
  • They we’re followed by the rejection of the Nehru report which, marked the end of the Hindu Muslim cooperation.
  • Both groups protested separately against the British.

Declaration Of Independence

A
  • In December 1929, Congress met in Lahore.
  • Jawaharlal Nehru was made president of the session which rejected a dominion status, and wanted full independence.
  • At midnight, on December 31st, he led a procession to the banks of River Ravi, where the Indian flag was raised, and people cried; “ Long live the revolution.”
  • 3 weeks later the Declaration of Independence, by Ghandi was read across India.
