englarded peyers patches
-secondary to preceding viral illness
-anatomical leakpoints usch as meckes diverticulum
older children
-HSP
-lymphoma
-cystic fibrosis
who is commonly affected by intussusception (age, gender)
infants between 6-18months
-80-90% between 3mnntsh and 3 years
boys are affected twice as often as girls
classical triad of intussusception symptoms 3
severe intermittent abdominal pain
redcurrant jelly stools
vomitting (only in 20% of cases)
other features of intussusception 3
inconsolable crying
during paroxysm the infant will characteristically draw their knees up and turn pale
sausage-shaped mass in right upper quadrant
investigations for intussusception 2
ultrasound
-may show a target like mass
AXR- may sow abscence of air in ascending colon and soft tissue desity in ascending colon but lack sensitivity
-otherwise diagnosis is based on clinical suspiiocn
management of intussusception 2
reduction by air insufflation under radiological control, which is now widely used first-line compared to the traditional barium enema
if this fails or child has signs of peritonitis
-surgery is perfromed
