Introduction to Physiological and Anatomical Terminology Flashcards
Define “Anatomy”
The study of the structure and the shape of the body and its parts, and their relationships to one another
Define “Physiology”
The study of how the body and its parts work and function
What is Gross Anatomy ?
The study of those body structures that are large enough to be examined without magnifying deices
What is Microscopic Anatomy ?
A study that relies on the use of microscopy to examine the smallests structures of the body (e.g tissues, cells etc.)
What do you call the front of the body with palms down ?
Anterior view
what do you call the back of the body ?
Posterior view
what do you call the back of the body ?
Posterior view
Body laying down face up and palms down
Supine position
Body laying face down and palms up
Prone position
Front of the body
anterior/ventral
e.g toes are anterior to a foot
Back of body
Posterior/Dorsal
heels is posterior to foot
Towards the head or upper part of structure of the body
Superior/Cranial
e.g head is superior to the abdomen
Away from the head or towards the lower part of a structure of the body
Inferior/cadual (when referring to inferior spine)
e.g abdomen is inferior to the head
Towards the midline of the body / on the inner side of
Medial
e.g. heart is medial to arm
away from the middline of the body/on the outer side
Lateral
e.g. arms are lateral to the hears
Between a more medial and more lateral structure
Intermidiate
e.g the collerbone is intermidiate between the breast bone and the shoulder
close to the origin of the body part of limb that attaches to trunk of the body
Proxial
e.g. upper arm is proxiimal portion of arm
Further from the origin of the body part or the part of limb that is furthest from trunk of the body
Distal
e.g. forearm is dstal portion of arm
position closest to surface of body
Superficial
e.g. skin is superficial to the internal organs
position furthest from the surface of body-more internal
Deep
e.g. liver is deep into the abdomen
Sagittal plane
the imaginary line that runs from top of head to bottom of pelvis
Frontal plane
the imaginary line that separates fromt from back (anterior from posterior)
Traverse plane
the imaginary line that separates top half of body from bottom
what are the dorsal cavities ?
- Cranial cavity
- Spinal cavity
Ventral body cavities
- Thoracic cavity
- Abdominal cavity
- Pelvic cavity
they are sometimes called the abdominipelvic cavity
