What is a heart attack?

A

Blockage of one of the arteries which supplies the heart itself with oxygenated blood (coronary artery)

Leads to death of a region of heart muscle

What causes a heart attack?

A

Atherosclerosis is the build up of fatty plaques within artery walls, constricting blood flow

Rupture of the plaque leads to formation of a blood clot which can dislodge and cause acute disease

A

Malformations which are present in the heart at birth

These affect almost 1 in every 100 newborn babies

Caused by an error during embryonic development

This may result from a genetic mutation or from environmental factors (e.g. smoking or alcohol use by mother
