Intro to imunology Flashcards
What are the two branches of the immune system - list the features of them both
Innate-
Always present, Fast reponse
repsonds to common sections of the cell
fixed reponse - doesnt adapt
no memory
adaptive branch-
imporved reponse over time
slow acting
long term memory
adapts to specifics of the pathogen throughout the defense.
What are out skin surface defenses
Physical:
Tightly packed skin cells,
Epidermis dead cells flakes off,
Dermis live cells replace epidermal cells- collogen and blood vessles
phagocytes between
Chemical:
Antimicrobials
lyzosmes
sebum low pH
sweat ( salty)
What are out mucosal surface defenses
Made of 1-2 layers of cells
both Goblet cells and columnar cells
secretion of muscus which is moved up to the pharynx - mucociliary escelator (in the assophagas)
What chemical defenses do the mucus layer have
low pH in the stomac
some cell - lysosmes
defendins
muscus
Where do you find the mucus membranes
Ocular surface
rectal
digestive
respiritory tract
What is the two primary and two secondary parts of the lymphatic system
Primary:
thymus and bone marrow
Secondary:
Lymph nodes
spleen
What is the function of the two primary sectors of the lympatic system
Bone marrow - produce new immune cells via stem cells (eg T cells)
Thymus - A place which teaches immune cells what to attack and what not to attack to prevent autoimmune reponses
What is the function of the two secondary sections of the lymphatic system
Lymph nodes:
network connected by lyphatic vessles
aim to drain fluid from tissues
can become the site of immune reponse when pathogens are detected
spleen:
Site of immune reponse primarily for blood born diseases
