intelligence 1 Flashcards
Binet and Simon
- focused on** Higer metal processes**:memory,problem solving,languague,judgment
**idea of mental age ** : a 5 yeasrs old will get so many right answer
brought to North America by Terman
Standford-Binet Intelligence Test
- mean score of 100
- originally used IQ
- scores now given based on deviation-where a child scores relative to the avarage at their age
- initially provided 1 general score,now also provides subscore(ex:verbal)
- focused on children
Wechsler Inteligence Scale for Children(WISC)
- less verbal
*first to have subscale - provides general scores plus 5 composite scores
- generally prefered
intelligent score
- normal curve
- mean of 100
- score measures how far you deviates of the typical score of your age (are you doing better or worst then people with your age)
realibility
- does it show the same resoults
- split-half reliability:first half and second half have same scores? yes
- test-retest realibility: are scores reliables when doing the test again ? yes
they are pretty reliable
validity
- is it really measuring intelligence ?
- predictive validity? does it predict things that have to do with IQ (ex:grades, income)
- construct validity? is it actually measuring intelligence ?
psychometric approch
- measurement of mental abilities, devising tests to measure a person’s inteligence relative to others
- but not everyone agrees(12)
General intelligence
- general intelligence as multiple abilities
- made of Crystalized intelligence and Fluid inteligence
crystalized intelligence
facts you learn trough school, across your life
fluid intelligence
ability to think on the spot, to solve new problems
3 level of intelligence is another type of general inteligence
ex:vocabulary,fluid
multiple types of intelligence that can not be tested
- stenberg’s theory of sucessful intelligence
- Gardner’s multiple inteligence
stenberg’s theory of sucessful intelligence
- Analytical intelligence: like traditional inteligents tests
- Pratical intelligence:ability to adapt to new situations, street smart
- Creative intelligence:different/out of the box solutions you can come up with
Gardner’s multiple inteligence
he belive that their was 8 types of intelligence that may not relate to each other
individual differences in IQ: genetics(twin test)
- passive effects:will create an enviroment that renforces the childs genes (ex: a lot of books in the household)-Evocative effects:where the childs genes evocates an enviroment genetic effects(ex:reads a lot so parents buy more books )-Active effects:child choosing their enviroment that reinforces their genetics(ex: go to reading clubs/harder classes)
effects on genes seems to get stronger as we get older
