IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION IN FIXING ORGANS Flashcards
memorization
Suspended WHOLE in 10% buffered formalin for 2 TO 3 WEEKS to ensure fixation and hardening prior to sectioning
BRAIN
Should NOT BE DISSECTED before they are fixed since this may lead to tissue collapse and wrinkling due to escape of vitreous humor; formol-alcohol must be injected before immersing the organ in fixative
EYES
Organ may be covered with LAYERS OF GAUZE to maintain it under the surface
AIR-FILLED LUNG
note:
- Healthy lungs will FLOAT
- Diseased lungs will SINK (TB, pneumonia)
Packed with COTTON soaked in fixative of completely OPENED before immersion in fixing solution
