Immunity Review Flashcards
Describe the complement system (OILCAN)
Opsonization:
-opsonins bind to surface of bacteria marking them
-phagocytic cells bind to receptors increasing binding of opsonins
-C3b and C4b
Inflammation: mast cells in anaphylaxis (C3a, C4a, C5a)
Lysis: due to formation of MAC (C5b6789)
Chemotaxis: (C5a)
Agglutination: changes surface of bacteria making them sticky
Neutralization
Describe B lymphocytes
involved in humoral immunity
Bone marrow
aka plasma cells
make antibodies in the form of immunoglobulins
Describe T lymphocytes
95% of circulating lymphocytes
thymus
Cell-mediated immunity
Describe differentiation of T cells
Precursors in bone marrow go to the thymus where they differentiate into CD8 or CD4
