immunity & infection Flashcards
what is communicable (infectious disease)?
can be passed between people
what is non-communicable disease?
cannot be passed
what do tuberculosis, meningitis, tetanus, pertussis and syphilis all have in common?
vaccine preventable disease
Pathogens:bacteria what is. it?
Bacteria: Most abundant living organisms
(strep throat)
Pathogens: What is a virus?
lack function to grow & reproduce by themselves=parasites-> take what they need from host cells they invade
Pathogen: what is fungi
Fungi: Organisms (moulds, yeast) that absorb food from organic matter.
Pathogen: what is protozoa?
Protozoa: Single-celled organisms developing countries. e.g. malaria
pathogen: parasitic worms example
tapeworms
defence against pathogens: what is the first defence?
PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL BARRIERS (SKIN)
WHAT IS the 2nd Dfence against Pathogens?
IMMUNE SYSTEM : Dfender is the White blood cells ( always produced in bone marrow)
There is two types of lymphocytes: B cells & Tcells
what is autoimmune disorder?
lupus, rheumatoid arthritis
what is antigens?
non-self markers that immune response
summary of the phases: Phase 1?
viruses invade the body and take over the body cells to replicate
what is phase 3?
Killer T cells and NK cells destroy the infected body cells. B cells produce antibodies that bind virsuses and mark them for destruction by macrophages
