I: Infection Prevention Flashcards
Describe some methods of how infection can be spread.
- It could have a common source e.g. Water
- It could spread person to person directly
- ## It could spread from person to person indirectly
Give examples how infections can be spread by a common source.
- Environmental
- Food/water
- Animals
Give examples of infections that are spread directly from person to person.
- Influenza
- Norovirus
- Neisseria gonorrhoea
Give an example of an infection that is spread from person to person indirectly.
Malaria
Give 4 consequences of infection transmission.
- Endemic disease
- Outbreak
- Epidemic
- Pandemic
Define endemic disease.
The usual expected background rate of infection.
Define outbreak.
Two or more cases linked in time and place
Define epidemic.
A rate of infection greater than the usual background rate.
Define pandemic.
A very high rate of infection spreading across many regions, countries, continents.
What is meant by pathogen and vectors infection prevention.
Either reduce and eradicate the pathogen or reduce or eradicate the vector.
What is meant by patient infection prevention.
Either improve the health of the patient or improve the immunity if the patient either passively or actively.
What is meant by practice infection prevention.
Either avoidance of the pathogen or its vector via protective clothing or geographical decisions, or such changing behaviours. (Safe disposal of sharps and safe sex)
What is meant by infection prevention in a particular place?
To ensure an environment is safe e.g. Safe water, safe air, good quality housing.
