The study of progression from a single cell to a baby.
Where does fertilisation occur?
Ampullae regional the fallopian tube
Why are sperms not rejected as foreign bodies?
Surface proteins in sperm cells are ‘non self’

Contains immunosuppressants
What hormone is released by an ovum which causes sperm to travel towards it?
Progesterone
What is embryonic age?
Time since fertilisation
What is gestational age?
Time since last menstruation (embryonic age minus 2 weeks)
What is the germinal stage?
The time from fertilisation to the end of the second week
What is the embryonic period?
Time from the third week to the end of the eighth week
What is the foetal period?
Time from the beginning of the ninth week to birth at 38 weeks.
Where is the normal implantation site?
Upper part of the body of uterus (more often on the posterior wall)
