Human CNS development and spinal cord Flashcards
What happens to nerve conduction velocities during development?
They increase
What is caused when spinal cord fails to close at caudal end?
Spina bifida
WHat is caused when spinal cord fails to close at rostral end?
Anencephaly
What can prevent most neural tube defects?
folic acid - contain Vit B
What are the primary brain vesicles? (from most rostral end)
They are fluid filled swellings -
Prosencephalon, Mesencephalon, Rhomencephalon and spinal cord.
What are the secondary brain vesicles?
Prosencephalon divides into telencephalon, diencephalon and optic vesicles.
Rhombencephalon changes to metencephalon and mylencephalon.
What does white and grey mater contain?
White matter - processes
Grey matter- neuronal cell bodies
Where does the medulla oblongata develop from?
myelencephalon (hindbrain)
What is an interneuron?
Neurons that connect between sensory and motor neurons. a sensory neuron can activate multiple interneurons
What are the 3 spinal cord meninges?
Pia mater, arachnoid, dura mater.
What are the 2 spaces in meninges?
subarachnoid space (between pia mater and arachnoid mater) Subdural space (between arachnoid and dura mater)
What happens at rostral end to dura mater?
It splits into 2. The inner meningeal layer and endosteal layer.
What separates inner meningeal layer and endosteal layer
dura sinus
Where is cerebral spinal fluid found?
In central canal, brain ventricles and subarachnoid space
What secretes CSF?
choroid plexuses (mainly in ventricels)
