eating behaviour Flashcards
What is behaviour defined as?
The response of an organism to a stimulus
What is motivation?
driving force behind a behavour
What part of the brain is eating behaviour controlled by?
hypothalamus
Where does hypothalamus develop from?
diencephalon
What is anabolism and catabolism?
anabolism- building up macromolecules for energy storage
catabolism - breaking down of macromolecules for energy usage
What happened when there was lesion to both side of rats brain?
they were anorexic
What happened to rats if there was bilateral lesions in venteromedial hypothamus?
overeating and obesity
what is soluble protein responsible for eating behaviour and who discovered it?
Friedman founded LEPTIN
Where is leptin released from?
FAT CELLS
What does leptin do?
decrease eating behaviour and increase energy expenditure
What happens to leptin levels during startavtion?
leptin levels lower, which stimulates eating behaviour and reduces energy expenditure
What receptors does leptin act on?
receptors on neurons in ARCUATE nucleus in hypothalamus
What neurotransmitters are released when leptin binds to receptors?
alpha-msh and cart
What happens when the paraventricular nucleus is stimulated?
release TSH and ACTH from anterior pituitary gland.
act on thyroid and adrenal glands to INCREASE METABOLC RATE
what happens when brain stem is stimulated ?
sympathetic activity increased, body temp rises
