Human brain 2 Flashcards
What does sagittal and parasagittal mean?
sagittal- though midline
parasagittal- not through midline
How many cranial nerves does the brain stem contain?
10 (not olfactory or optic)
What is the brain stem composed of?
Medulla oblongata, PONS, and mesencephalon (midbrain)
What is decussation?
crossing over
What does PONS connect to and how?
Cerebellum by 3 pairs of peduncles.
What is the medulla oblongata?
center for respiration and circulation. (digestion sneezing swallowing)
What are olives?
In medulla oblongata , send info to cerebellum (inferior olive)
What does the pons contain?
respiratory centres
What are the roles of the cerebellum?
muscle tone, coordination, motor error checking, learning.
What happens in cerebellar ataxia?
loss of cerebellar neurons, causes jerky inprecise movements.
What does the mesencephalon contain?
SUbstantia nigra (GABA and dopamine), nuclues ruber (associated with cerebellum). TECTUM
what does the tectum contain?
Superior and inferior colliculi. Visual (superior) and auditory (inferior) reflexes.
What is the midbrain made up of?
Tegmentum and tectum
What does the diencephalon contain?
thalamus, hypothalamus, pineal.
What does the diencephalon link?
The midbrain and cerebrum
