eyes and retina Flashcards
What are the 3 layers of the eye? (from outermost inwards)
Tunica fibrosa, tunica vasculosa, tunica interna
What are the 2 parts in the tunica fibrosa?
sclera and cornea (transparent by lens)
contains collagen
What 2 parts are in the tunica interna?
retina and optic nerve
What 3 parts are in the tunica vasculosa?
choroid, ciliary body and iris
What is in the ciliary body?
ciliary muscle and ciliary epithelium
What secretes/produces aqueous humour?
Ciliary epithelium
What are the 2 humours in the eye and where are they?
Aqueous humour - between cornea and lens
Vitreous humour- in eyeball between lens and retina
What happens if pressure changes in the eye?
If increases-glaucoma (slow uptake of AH)
If decreases - cataracts (cloudy lens)
Where is light focussed?
on the retina - dioptric apparatus
What absorbs aqueous humour?
canal of schlemm
What is lens tensioned by?
intraoccular pressure
What does the iris do?
regulate light levels
What muscle causes pupil contrcition?
smooth circular muscle
What muscle causes pupil dilation?
smooth radial muscle
What is photopupillary reflex?
reflex that controls the diameter of the pupil, in response to the intensity of light and changes with distance. (occurs in both eyes, even if one is stimulated)
