Human Brain 3 Flashcards
What joins the 2 cerebral hemispheres?
Corpus callosum
What are gyri and sulci (fissures)?
gyri-bumps
sulci and fissures - grooves
What are 6 lobes of cerebrum?
Frontal, partietal, occupital, limbic, temporal, central
What is the cerebral cortex?
Outer cortex surrounding cerebrum and whitematter, and is composed of grey matter.
What roles does the cerebral cortex have?
Roles in consciousness, memory, attention, awareness thought and language
What is brodmanns area?
region of cerebral cortex recognised by cytoarchitecture
What is brocas aphasia?
Left frontal lobe damage. EXPRESSIVE APHASIA. impaired speech.
What is wernickes aphasia?
Posterior temporal lobe damage. RECEPTIVE (fluent) APHASIA.
language comprehension failure.
Give some examples of modern brain mapping
PET scanning, functional MRI, regional blood flow.
What are the structures of the basal ganglia?
Caudate Putamen (these 2 make up striatum) Globus pallidus subthalamic nucleus substantia nigra (mesencephalon)
What is function of basal ganglia?
Motor control and movement
What is limbic system?
COmplex network of nerves related to memory and emotion. COntains limbic lobe, amygdala, hippocampus, thalamus, hypothalamus.
What is the neocortex?
a part of the cerebral cortex concerned with sight and hearing in mammals
