How Science Works (9) Flashcards
What is an independent variable
This is the value that I as the investigator changes.
What is a categoric variable
A categoric variable has no numerical value.
What is a dependant variable
This is the value that depends on the independent value.
What is a continuous variable
A continuous variable has a numerical value, e.g. Temperature, length, volume
How is a continuous variable plotted
As a line graph
How is a categoric variable plotted
As a bar chart
What is the difference between accuracy and precision
- An accurate result is a correct result
* If your result if precise then if you take repeated tests, the results are all very close together.
What is reliability
If someone else can repeat your measurements and get the same results then your results are reliable
What is a hypothesis
- A hypothesis is an educated guess about how things work.
* It is a statement NOT a question
When drawing a table, the independent variable needs to go on the ___ column
Left
When drawing tables the dependant variable should always go on the _____
Right
When should you draw a line graph
If the variable is a number e.g.
a continuous variable
When drawing a graph, the independent variable goes along the _ axis
It goes along the x axis
When drawing a graph, the dependant variable goes along the _ axis
Y
In the conclusion you either _____ the hypothesis or _____ it
In the conclusion you either REJECT the hypothesis or ACCEPT it
