homeostasis of glucose levels (nutrition) Flashcards
what is homeostasis control of blood glucose levels
-maintenance of a constant environment
-the body maintains homeostasis by a process called negative feedback
-when an abnormal level is detected, a corrective active is switched on
-negative feedback occurs when the normal level is once again, the corrective action is switched off
what is the amount of glucose in blood (blood sugar level) if it’s too high
-too high = hyperglycaemia
what is the amount of glucose in blood (blood sugar level) if it’s too low
-too low: hypoglycaemia
what can hyperglycaemia cause
-kidney and heart failure
what hypoglycaemia cause
-headaches, shakiness, weakness, seizures and even death
from what cells in the pancreas is two hormones released
-islets of langerhans
what is insulin
-decreases blood glucose levels
-released from pancreas
what is gluCAGON
-increases blood glucose levels
-released from pancreas (iol)
what does insulin cause
-causes the cells of the body (liver and muscle) to take in MORE glucose from blood stream
-produced by beta cells of iol
how is excess glucose stored
-as glygoGEN
what does glucagon cause
-causes the cells storing glycogen to break down carbs and release glucose into blood stream
-released by ALPHA cells of iol
