fungi Flashcards
what is the two types of fungi
-macroscopic and microscopic
describe macroscopic fungi
-fleshy fungi with clearly fruiting bodies known as mushrooms
describe microscopic fungi
-unicellular yeasts
-multicellular thread like moulds
eg: bread moulds
what is rhizopus
-multicellular and consists of a mass of branched filaments or hyphae
-hyphae forms a vegetative body = mycelium
-a thallus bc no true roots, stems and leaves can be distinguished
what are the three types of hyphae
runners/ stolons: hyphae ghat branch horizontally on the surface of the substrate
rhizoids: branches of stolons that penetrates the substrates and anchors the mycelium
sporangiophore: hyphae that grows up vertically and develops sporangia on their tips to produce spores
general characteristics of fungi
-yeasts are unicellular while mushrooms and moulds are multicellular
-eukaryotic
-cell walls consist of chitin
-mass of branched filaments
-heterotrophic
-some are parasites
-some love mutualistically
how does reproduction occur
-unicellular fungi: asexually by binary fission
-multicellular fungi: asexually by the means of spores during favourable conditions
-sexually by means of gametes during unfavourable conditions
what’s thrush
-thrush is caused by a fungus called candida albicans
-grows anywhere on the body but favours moist areas
what are the effects of thrush
-oral thrush: characterised by white scars on the tongue and in the mouth
what’s the management of thrush
-improved hygiene
-following a balanced diet
-controlled stress levels
