Homeostasis Flashcards
anatomy
(structure) “a cutting open” the study of physical structure and relationships of body parts
what could scientists not do 200 years ago?
they were not allowed to study humans, only animals, until after the black plague
physiology
(function) study of how living organisms perform vital functions maintaining homeostasis
what works together to maintain homeostasis
all of your organ systems
what does homeostasis regulation involve?
a receptor-> control center-> effector
thermometer-> thermostat-> air conditioners on
Negative Feedback
a variation outside normal limits triggers an automatic response that corrects the situation
ex: body temp, blood glucose levels
Positive feedback
initial stimulus produces a response that reinforces the stimulus (amplifies)
ex: crowd cheering at a football game
what happens when homeostasis fails?
- hypothermia, you can die
- fever, your cells start to cook
- glucose, if levels are too high or low, you can die
Cells
unicellular, multicellular
reproduce
sexual, asexual
homeostasis
ability to maintain an internal stable body environment
DNA
genetic code made up of A,C,G,T
Ability to obtain and use energy
photosynthesis, metabolism
grow
in size, in developmental stages(caterpillar to butterfly)
movement
internal cellular movement, physical movement
