Histology of Epithelial Cells Flashcards
What are 3 features of the epithelium?
- Forms dense cellular sheets attached to each other via desmosomes (structure by which 2 cells are attached)
- Has no blood vessels (nutrients diffuse from connective tissue
- Sits on a basal lamina complex (Separates the epithelium from underlying connective tissue)
What are the 4 classifications of epithelium tissues?
Cell shape, arrangement, specialised and specialised cells
How can you identify simple squamous epithelium?
Lining surfaces involve in passive transport of gasses or fluids
How do you identify simple cuboidal epithelium?
It forms a cuboid shape and is single layered.
How long is a microvilli?
0.5-1 micrometre long
What type of epithelial cell is a goblet cell?
A columnar cell
What is a way of identifying a pseudostratisfied cell?
All the cells are attached to the basement membrane
What is the length of a cilia projection?
7-10 micrometres
How many microtubules does cilia have?
20
Give some identifications of stratified epithelium?
- Physical protection in oral cavity, pharynx, oesophagus, uternine cervix and vagina
- Sites subject to mechanical abrasion but kept moist by glandular secretions
- Cells remain nucleated
- Physical protection and prevention desiccation
- Top layer composed of dead cells without nuclei
What are two reasons for keratinisation?
1 = protection 2 = prevention of desiccation
How does keratin prevent desiccation?
Cells become extremely flattened, keratins become cross-linked by disuphide bridges, cells die, lose nuclei and become dehydrates and keratin filaments packed together.
What are 3 good aspects of transitional epithelium?
It accommodates a large degree of stretch, protection from toxic content and it is waterproof.
