Bodily Fluids Flashcards
In an adult male, what percentage of them is water?
What are the 3 places that this water comes from?
60% water
Intracellular, plasma, interstitial
Most of this water is inside the cells
How many litres of water is present in each of the 3 places where water is in the body?
Plasma = 3.5L
Interstitial fluid = 10.5 L
Intracellular fluid = 28L
What are other fluid components of the body?
Cerebrospinal fluid (lines the outside of the brain)
Synovial fluid
Lymph
GI tract secretions
What equation can we use to work out the concentration for?
Volume = substance added / concentration
What 3 substances can we use to work out a concentration of a substrate?
- Plasma volume (something that does not cross capillaries)
- Extracellular fluid (something that does enter cells easily)
- Total body water
Finish these two equations:
Interstitial space = ?
Intracellular space = ?
Extracellular space - plasma volume
Total body water - extracellular space
What are the major constituents in blood?
Ions in solution
Proteins
Dissolved gases, nutrients, metabolites
Other cells in blood (lymphocytes e.c.t)
What are the 3 main ions in body fluids?
What do they determine?
Na+, Cl-, K+
They determine osmolarity.
