Henry 8 Religioun Flashcards
What was the weaknesses with the church before Henry 8 reformed it?
- Corruption
- Anticlericalism- opposition to the social and political influence of clergy and the influence of canon law
- Decline of monasticism this is since by 1520s cardinal Wolsey had already dissolved around 20 monasteries and turned them into educational institutes
- Larger monastries had lost their sense of direction and had become large businesses with large resources
What religious changes took place in 1534?
- By 1534 through Act of Supremacy and king becomes supreme head of the church
- 6 new dioceses which extended the jurisdiction of a bishop and therefore improved the overall administration of the church
How did the dissolution of the monastries happen?
- 1535 Cromwell had the Valor Ecclesiasticus which was a survey to discover the wealth of the church
- Cromwell first did a Act of Parliament in 1536 which dissolved the smaller monatsries which was 200 quid or less since he accused the smaller monasteries for letting the standards slip in the church
- The dissolving was exacerbated after the pilgrimage of grace since many of the heads of monastic houses surrendered
- 1539 Act of parliament dissolved the remaining monastries
What were the attack on religious practices starting mainly from 1536?
- 1536 first set of royal injections which placed a restriction on the number of holy days and pilgrimages
- 1538 2nd set of injections which made veneration of relics as fantasies and thuis meant that pirlgrimages and relics and images were to be publicly recanted by the clergy which was radicallll
What were the changes to the Bible in 1538?
- By 1538 the Bible was released in English and each parish church was required to have a English copy
- by 1539 the first copy came out
- 1543 their was an act for the advancement of true religious which therefore ensured that only upper class males can read the Bible to ensure that social control still remained
What were the changes to doctrine under Henry 8th?
- 1536 the Ten Articles:-
3 sacraments baptism, penance and Eucharist were needed for salvation (Lutheran) but the definition of Eucharist was ambitious
Confession (Catholic) - This was therefore showcasing both Lutheran and catholic influences on the doctorine
1537 bishops book:-
This restored the four sacaraments from the Ten Articles, but the four restored sacaraments were given a lower status (conservative doctorine change)
1539 Six Articles Act:-
This reasserted catholic doctorine and denial of transubstantion was deemed heretical- HUGE CATHOLIC WINNN
1543 Kings Book - this revised the bishops book the emphasis was largely conservative but with some Lutheran hints
How much had the church changed from 1509 to 1547?
It had reformed cuz :-
- The jursidciation of the pope had been destroyed
- papal law and canon law had been removed
- the onastries had been dissolved much of the church resources and infrastructure had been transferred to the crown
- Parish churches were required to have English bibles though many of them did not
- humanism had become much more influential
It didn’t reform much cuz
- much of the church hierarchy was the same
- there had been lil attempts to alter the church
- services remaine largely traditional in form
- passing of the six articles act 1539 and the fall of Cromwell seriously weakened the cause for religious reform
