Q

What are the major anesthetic implications for a

patient undergoing a hemipelvectomy?

A

The primary anesthetic concerns in these patients involve the
extensive trauma, blood loss, and postoperative pain
associated with the procedure. A study in Australia reported
that the mean crystalloid requirement was 8500 mL with an
average of 7 units of blood transfused. A combination of
epidural/general anesthesia is often implemented. Fluid and
forced air warmers are a necessity and the patient can be
expected to recover in the intensive care unit.
