Heat And Insulation Flashcards
What is heat
The amount of energy the particles in a substance have.It is measured in joules(J)
Conduction
Particles in solids pass vibrations from particles to particles
For example: a metal pan gets hot
Convection
Particles in fluids(liquids or gases) heat up and rise becase the gain energy, spread and therefore be less dense. Then, they cool down, loose energy and then back down. This cycle is repeated.
For example: Radiator heating up a room.
Radiation
No particles are used, it travels as waves, cant travel through opaque surfaces and can be absorbed ro reflected
For example: Sun heating up Earth
Ñame for heat energy
Thermal energy
How is temperature measured
ºC
What happens when particles expand
The vibrate more so there is more space between them
Why we have to conserve energy
If you generate energy you pollute and consume valuable and finite materials
Why do we have to insulate homes
To conserve energy
