What is the heart?
A muscular organ located in the thoracic cavity behind the sternum and between the lungs, responsible for pumping blood throughout the body
What are the 4 chambers of the heart?
- Left atrium
- Right atrium
- Left ventrical
- Right ventrical
What does the atria (plural for atrium) do?
Upper chambers that receive blood returning to the heart from the body and lungs
What do the ventricles do?
Lower chambers that pump blood out of the heart to the body and lungs
What does the right side of the heart do?
Pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs.
What does the left side of the heart do?
Pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body.
What makes up the heart?
- Atria
- Ventricles
- Vena cava
- Pulmonary arteries
- Veins aorta
- Tricuspid and bicuspid valves
- Semi-lunar valves
- Coronary arteries
What is the function of the left ventricle?
Recieves blood from left atruim and pumps to the aorta
What is the funciton of the inferior vena cava?
Returns de-oxygenated blood from the legs, back, abdomen and pelvis to the right atrium
What is the funciton of the reight ventricle?
Recieves blood fromthe right atrium and pumpts it to the main pulmonary artery
What is the funciton of the tricuspid valve?
Prevents blood flow back into the right atrium of the heart
What is the funciton of the right atrium?
Recieves blood returning to the heart from the superior and inferior vena cava
What is the funciton of the pulmonary veins?
Carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium
What is the funciton of the superior vena cava?
Returns de-oxygenated blood from the head, neck, arm and chest to the right atrium
What is the funciton of the aorta?
Carries oxygenated blood away from the heart
