Health&SocialCare: Unit4- 1.1~ Composition of blood Flashcards
Anatomy and physiology for health and social care
What is anatomy?
Internal, external structures of the body and their physical relationships.
What is physiology?
The study of the functions of those structures
What is blood?
A specialised bodily fluid that supplies essential nutrients to our cells and carries waste from the cells.
What are the components that makes up our blood?
- Platelets
- Plasma
- White blood cells (Leucocytes, neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes)
- Red blood cells (Erythrocytes)
What are the components of plasma?
- 90% Water
- Glucose
- Amino acids
- Vitamins
- Minerals
- Co2
- Electrolytes
What is the function of erythrocytes (RBC)?
Carries oxygen around the body. These cells contain haemogoblin, an iron-rich protein that binds with oxygen in the lungs. They’re biconcave in shape which increase surface area for transportation
What are some functions of plasma?
Carries nutrients, hormones, proteins to parts of the body that needs it
What are the components of leucocytes (neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes)?
- Help to defend the body against infectious diseases and foreign invaders.
- They are larger than RBCs but less numerous
What is a function of platelets?
Cell fragments that helps in blood clotting and wound healing. When theres a cut or abrasion, platelets clump together to seal the wound and prevent excessive bleeding
What is the function of Leukocytes (WBCs)?
Helps defend the body against infectious diseases and foreign invaders, they are larger then RBCs but less numerous
