What are three learning styles?
Visual
Auditory
Kinetic
What enables learning? (4)
Readiness
Motivation
Ability
Developmental level
What are some principles of learning? (4)
Motivation to learn
Ability to learn
Learning styles and preference
Learning environment
What are some components of motivation to learn?
Attentional set, motivation, psychosocial adaptation, anxiety, self-efficacy, social motives
What are some components of ability to learn?
Cognitive, emotional, developmental and physical capabilities, specific or different learning abilities.
What are the domains of learning? (3)
Cognitive
Affective
Psychomotor
What are five educational theories?
Behavioural Cognitive Humanist Social learning Constructivism
What three things does Bandura’s social cognitive theory include?
Bandura’s model of learning and development includes behaviour, environment, and person (cognitive).
According to Bandura’s social cognitive theory, how does learning occur?
Learning occurs through observing and imitating the behaviour of others.
What is self-efficacy?
Belief in the ability to take action.
What are the three motivating factors of learning according to Bandura’s social cognitive theory?
Physical motivators
Social incentives
Cognitive motivators
What are physical motivators? (behavioural motivators of learning according to Bandura’s social cognitive theory)
Physical motivators include internal motivators = memory of previous discomfort
What are social incentives? (behavioural motivators of learning according to Bandura’s social cognitive theory)?
Social incentives = things like praise and encouragement, increasing self-esteem, and giving the client a reason to continue learning. It’s also looking at the support that they have. Eg. what does their social support look like?
What are cognitive motivators? (behavioural motivators of learning according to Bandura’s social cognitive theory)?
Cognitive motivator = describing our internal thought processes associated with the change. If the person can actually see and understand that a positive change is happening, they are more likely to continue with the change process.
What are some principles of teaching? (6)
Learning objectives Educational theory Domains of learning Selection of teaching strategies Timing Organizing teaching material
How should teaching material been organized?
Build on existing knowledge
Simple to complex
Reinforcement and retention
What is the role of the PHN in health education? (Nursing process)
Nursing process:
Assess - identify learning/educational needs
Diagnose - Establish Educational Diagnosis = topic and grade level
Plan = Identify educational goal and objectives and select appropriate teaching strategies
Implement = Teaching plan
Evaluate = Educational processes and outcomes
What are some characteristics of effective presentations?
Well prepared Attentive to context Able to "read" the audience Able to connect with audience Use of relevant examples Use a variety of teaching methods
What are some teacher related barriers to effective health education?
Incomplete assessment.
Age-inappropriate content, language and/or strategies.
Trying to do too much in time allotted.
Lack of experience/skill in dealing with disruptive/distracting behaviour.
What are some learner related barriers to effective education?
Esperiencing physical or psychological discomfort Language barrier Distracted Learning disability Personal values Prior knowledge and skill
