Health-Chapter 17-Reproductive Systems Flashcards
New life begins when the male sperm and egg join in…
fertilization
The glands that produce sperm are called…
testes
A fertilized egg grows and develops in the…
uterus
… occurs when semen leaves the body.
ejaculation
The… are the organs in the female that produce egg cells.
ovaries
Sperm is stored in the…
epididymis
Most fertilization occurs in the…
fallopian tubes.
… is the release of one mature egg cell form an ovary once a month.
Ovulation
The… is sensitive to temperature causing it to either contract when cld or to relax when warm.
scrotum
Proper care of the Male Reproductive System
annual checkups; testicular self-exams; good hygiene; avoid wearing clothing that is too tight; where protective gear when playing sports; abstain from sexual activity
Proper care of the Female Reproductive System
regular (annual) checkups; good hygiene (bathe regularly); record menstrual cycle; change pad or tampon every 4 hours; self-checks for breast cancer; abstain from sexual activity
What part of the menstrual cycle is day one?
When the lining of the uterus begins to break down.
When is an egg released from an ovary (usually)?
Day 13-15
What is PMS?
Pre-Menstrual Syndrome- exaggerated emotions (like anger) before the menstrual cycle begins.
Name three common problems of the male reproductive system:
testicular cancer inguinal hernia prostate cancer Testicular torsion STDs
What is a hernia?
when an internal organ pushes against or through a surrounding cavity wall. appears as a lump or swelling in the groin or lower abdomen.
often caused by obesity, coughing/sneezing excessively, or lifting heavy objects
What is an inguinal hernia
occur in males when part of the intestine pushes into the scrotum
What is testicular torsion?
when the spermatic cord (the structure that holds the testes together) becomes twisted around a testicle. blood flow to the testicle is cut off.
Name three common problems of the female reproductive system.
infertility (inability to become pregnant)
ovarian cysts
STDs
Cancer of ovaries, uterus, or cervix
What are the reproductive cells?
Sperm (male) and ovum/egg (female)
What are the parts of the male reproductive system?
seminal vesicles prostate gland cowper's gland urethra penis testes scrotum vas deferens epididymis
What are the parts of the female reproductive system
ovaries fallopian tubes uterus endometrium vagina cervix
What are the purposes of the male reproductive system?
produce, store, and deliver sperm
What are the purposes of the female reproductive system?
to produce mature ovums
to allow fertilization to take place
to allow growth and development of fertilized egg
define scrotum
sac of skin that holds the testicles just underneath the penis
seminal vesicles
two glands on either side of bladder that secrete seminal fluid
testicles
two oval shaped organs contained in the scrotum, which produce the hale hormone testosterone and sperm (testes)
penis
the tube like sex organ of males which hangs outside of the body
prostate glands
a gland near the bladder that adds fluid to semen
urethra
the tube that at different times carries urine and semen out of the body
vas deferens
the thin long tubes through which perm trave from the testicles and where sperm are mixed with other fluid to make semen
bladder
a sac inside the abdomen that holds urine
foreskin
the skin around the head of an uncircumcised penis
ovaries
contain ova or eggs and produce hormones
fallopian tubes
carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus
uterus
shelters and nourishes the fetus
endometrium
lining of the uterus
cervix
opening of the uterus
vagina
muscular passage way from uterus to outside the body
