ConceptualPhysics-Heat,Temperature,andEnergy Flashcards
Question (maybe with multi choice) then answer
When substances heat up, what happens to their molecules?
They begin to move faster and farther apart.
What is absolute zero?
The temperature at which all molecular motion ceases- -273 degrees Celsius or 0 Kelvin
What is heat?
The energy contained in an object because of its moving molecules.
What is temperature?
The measurement of the speed of molecules’ movement in a substance.
When two objects of different temperatures are placed near each other, what will happen to their temperatures? What is this called?
Their temperatures will gradually become equal. This is called thermal equilibrium.
Is there more heat in an iceberg or a pot of boiling water?
An iceberg. The sheer number of molecules in an iceberg outweighs the high temperature in a pot of boiling water.
Is there more heat in a cup of ice or a cup of boiling water?
Boiling Water.
What creates heat?
When molecules become active.
What happens to the temperature when molecules move faster?
it increases
How does a thermometer work?
Mercury or alcohol is sealed in a glass tube. If it becomes hot, the liquid expands, showing the temperature “going up”. When it becomes colder, the liquid shrinks, showing the temperature “going down”.
What is energy?
what makes matter move or change; the ability to do work
Name a form of potential energy (one).
a bow-string pulled back; a stretched rubber band; food; water lifted up (above a generator/propellor); a wrecking ball pulled back before a swing.
Name a form of kinetic energy (one).
Arrow moving through are; launched rubber band; water falling through a turbine; a wrecking ball swinging
Name a source or mechanical energy (one).
wind; moving water
What type of energy is stored in food?
chemical energy
What type of energy is generated when atoms cause heat?
nuclear energy (or thermal…)
Define Heat/Thermal Energy.
total of all kinetic energy in particles of a substance
Define kinetic energy
the energy of movement
Define temperature
A measure of the average kinetic energy of particles.
which has a higher temperature? One gallon of water at 70 degrees Fahren. or Two gallons of water at 70 degrees Fahren.?
Niether!!! They have the same temperature, so obviously THEY HAVE THE SAME TEMPERATURE!!!
Which contains more heat? One gallon of water at 70 degrees Fahren or two gallons of water at 70 degrees Fahren.?
Two gallons because if they have the SAME TEMPERATURE, just look at the VOLUME. (and if they have the SAME VOLUME, just look at the TEMPERATURE). If they are both the same, THE HEAT AND TEMPERATURE ARE BOTH THE SAME TOO!!!!!
Which has particles that are moving faster: One gallon at 70 degrees F; Two gallons at 70 degrees F; or Two gallons of water at 80 degrees F?
C.! When all the question cares about is speed of movement, go to the MEASUREMENT of speed of movement: TEMPERATURE! That’s ALL that matters (in this case).
