Health And Disease Flashcards
What is health
The state if physical and mental wellbeing
What makes us ill
Communicable diseases caused by pathogens
What are the 2 types of diseases
Communicable and non communicable
What are some risk factors of a disease
Smoking - nicotine, carbon monoxide
Lack of exercise
Drinking to much alcohol
Drugs
Obesity and diet - LDL, sugary fooda
Poor hygiene
Unprotected sex
AGE - weakened immune system
What is a pathogen
A microorganism that causes a disease
e.g. bacteria, viruses, fungi
What are communicable diseases
A disease that can be spread from person to person via pathogens
What is a non communicable disease
A disease that isn’t spread from person to person or by a pathogen
What are living pathogens called
Cellular
What are non living pathogens called
Acellular, e.g. virus
What are some of the communicabke pathogens
Fungi, bacteria, virus, protists
What are some communicable diseases
Bread moles, athletes foot, covid 19, maleria
Wht are some non communicable diseases
Cancer, diabetes, genetic conditions, dementia
What are the direct and indirect examples of passing communicable diseases
Direct contact: skin-to-skin contact
Both: air droplets (sneezing)
Indirect contact: bodily fluids, contaminated food
How do diseases infect us if we have defence systems
Diseases infect us when pathogens like viruses invade the body, enter cells (like white blood cells), rapidly reproduce inside them, and eventually burst them open, spreading more pathogens and weakening the immune response.
1 reason viruses aren’t classed as cells
Have no nucleus
How would i test for the presence of glucose in fruit
To test for the presence of glucose in plants, you can use Benedict’s solution. First, boil a small sample of the plant’s sap or extract with Benedict’s solution. If glucose is present, the solution will change from blue to green, yellow, orange, or red, depending on the amount of glucose.
How do pathogens cause disease and make us to feel ill
Reproduce binary through Binary Fission. They also release toxins which damage tissues
How do viruses make us ill
They reproduce rapidly causing damage to cells
