Plant Structure Flashcards
What are the components of plants
Waxy cubicle
Upper epidermis
Palisade mesophyll layer
Spongy mesophyll layer
Guard cells
Stomata
Whats the role of plant stems and roots
Transport substances, plants have 2 transport systems grouped into vascular bundles: xylem and phloem
Wht is the waxy cutile
Water-proof protective layer (outer outer layer)
Upper epidarmis
Transparent 1 cell thick layer with no chloroplasts to allow maximum light to enter the leaf
Palisade mesophyll layer
Largest layer full of tightly packed cells of chloroplasts, they receive most the light and is where photosynthesis occurs
Spongy mesophyll layer
Large layer of many air spaces to gases can diffuse efficiently, co2 in and oxygen out. They have a large surface area
Guard cells
To open and close the stomata depending on the conditions and they control waterloss
Stomata
Hole in the leaf to allow gases to diffuse in and out
Lower epidermis
Layer composed of epidermal cells and guard cells
