Communicable Diseases (fact) Flashcards
FACT on measles
A disease caused by a virus
Symptoms: fever, red skin rash
Spread: air-born (droplets)
Prevention: vaccination of early childhood
FACT on AIDS
disease caused by HIV virus
Symptoms: flu like symptoms, attacks immune cells to the point they cant fight
Spread: STD or exchange of bodily fluids
Prevention: antiretroviral drugs control it
FACT on Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) - plant disease
Disease caused by virus
Symptoms: Mosaic pattern of discolouring on leave (effect photosynthesis and growth)
Spread: contact between plants or contaminated tools
Prevention: removing infected plants, disinfecting tools and TMV resistance crops
FACT on Salmonella
Disease caused by a bacteria
Symptoms: food poisoning, fever, cramps
Spread: food in unhygienic conditions
Prevention: vaccination to control spread
FACT on Gonorrhoea
Disease caused by Bacteria
Symptoms: Thick yellow/green discharge from genitals, pain when urinating
Spread: STD
Prevention: penicillin (antibiotic)
FACT on Rose black spot
Disease caused by Fungi
Symptoms: purple/black spots developing on plant, effects photosynthesis
Spread: water, wind
Prevention: fungicides
FACT on Maleria
Disease spread by Protist
Symptoms: recurrent fever, can be fatal
Spread: vector - mosquitos
Prevention: vector prevention (nets) or prevention of breeding
Scientists produce a TMV resistance gene. Suggest how scientists can use this plant to produce many plants with the same gene
By taking cuttings from the plant (such as a stem or leaf) scientists can grow a new identical plant
Explain why a plant with TVM might have stunted growth
Plants with TMV have leaf discolouration. This means that the chlorophyll cannot take in the light from the sun effectively which will lead to a lack of photosynthesis taking place. As plants use photosynthesis to convert sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into glucose and oxygen, which provide energy for growth, these essential functions cannot be carried out. This means that the plant does not have sufficient nutrients to grow efficiently which is why it will have stunted growth
How can we prevent vectors from spreading illness apart from netw
Destroying still water pond
Repellants
Not going out in evening
How does Salmonella cause symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea
Reproduce in large amounts so the body cant destroy them all so they are forced to release
