Non esistono portatori cronici di solo HDV, è necessaria la presenza di HBV

Infection occurs only in the presence of HBV infection and is detected by demostrating anti-HDV (non è utile se IgM o IgG)

1. COINFEZIONE: anti-HDV plus IgM anti-HBc
   - 5% of cases of acute coinfection results in chronic infection
2. SUPERINFEZIONE: anti-HDV plus IgG anti HBc (core)
   - in almost all cases, HDV superinfection result in chronic infection. Si risolve raramente se non si risolve prima HBV infection
