HAZARDOUS MATERIALS INCIDENTS
The action plan should be centred primarily around the following: (3 things)
(1) Protection of life.
(2) Confinement of the material and its by-products.
(3) Control of the material and its effects on humans, animals, property and the environment.
HAZARDOUS MATERIALS INCIDENTS
There are basically four different methods of handling hazardous materials spills or leaks. They are:
(1) Absorption.
(2) Containment.
(3) Separation.
(4) Neutralization.

On confirmation from the scene that a hazardous material is involved, who should be contacted?
Region of Peel Waste management team. They in turn will contact the appropriate Ontario Ministries for assistance.

If the involved accident has occurred on a public roadway, highway or freeway, who should be requested through comms?
Appropriate law enforcement agency.

What do you identify your hazardous materials incidents priorities based on?
- The type and magnitude of life hazard involved.
- The type and quantity of hazardous material(s) involved.
- The current and projected situation
HAZARDOUS MATERIALS INCIDENTS
Attempt to identify the involved material(s) by way of the following:
- Check placarding and/or labeling
- Check paperwork associated with the materials being transported or stored
- Check with persons directly related to the accident/incident (i.e. driver, owner, trainman, technician, plant manager etc)
- Obtain the exact spelling of the materials involved
- Have communications contact the shipper and/or manufacturer

- personal safety
- safety of others
- environmental impact

A fire in any of the following materials should signal a non-attack posture and immediate evacuation of the surrounding area
- Explosives A
- Explosives B
- Oxidizers
- Organic Peroxides
