DO NOT RESUSCITATE ORDERS
MFES personnel are obligated to provide emergency medical care to all patients who require it. What are the three exceptions?
- Patients displaying obvious signs of death
- A properly identified physician takes patient care
- A valid DNR is provided for the patient

When presented with a valid DNR, the Officer will notify communications of the following:
- Patient is VSA
- Valid DNR
- No resuscitation efforts being performed
- Request paramedics be updated

What are the three things that make a DNR form valid?
1) 7-digit serial number located on upper right corner of the form
2) Form filled out and signed by:
- Medical doctor (MD), or
- Registered nurse (RN), or
- Registered practical nurse (RPN)
3) The patient’s name matches the DNR
DO NOT RESUSCITATE ORDERS
If requested to leave the patient or the premises, MFES personnel shall: (3)
- leave the patient or premise
- notify comms that patient access is denied
- request police attend the scene
* Comm will notify police, CO will update ambulance and police on their arrival
DO NOT RESUSCITATE ORDERS
DNR form can be revoked when? (3)
- Patient wishes to have resuscitation efforts made (even if request is vague or uncertain)
- “Substitute decision maker” decides resuscitation effects be made
- a physician or nurse determines the plan of treatment now includes resuscitation efforts
- If DNR cannot be validated crews will err on the side of life
