Hand Flashcards
How many bones are in the hand?
27
8 carpal bones
5 metacarpals
14 phalanges
What’s the order of joints proximal to distal?
MCP -> PIP -> DIP
What’s a swan neck deformity?
at the DIP
What’s a boutonniere deformity?
at the PIP, MCC = rhuematoid arthiritis
Where does most of the finger movement come from?
extrisnic muscles in the forearm and intrisnic muscles of the hand - thenar, hypothenar, interossei, lumbircal muscles
What makes up the thenar muscle?
adductor pollicis, adductor pollicis brevis, flexor pollicis brevis, opponens pollices
What makes up the hypothenar muscle?
abductor digiti minimi, flexor digiti minimi, opponens digiti minimi, palmaris brevis
What’s the difference between dorsal and palmar interossei?
4 - abducts - dorsal
3 - adducts - palmar
What are the flexor tendons each digit has except thumb?
flexor digitorum profundus (to the DIP) and flexor digitorum superficialis (PIP)
What is the thumb flexor?
flexor pollicis longus
What’s it called with infection involving tendon sheaths responsible for flexing or closing the hand, and can be a deep space infection and more frequently occurs in individuals with underlying suppressed immune systems?
infectious flexor tenosynovitis
What types of pulleys are in the fingers?
annular pulleys - largest
cruciate pulleys
maintains flexor tendons close to joints axis of motion preventing bowstringing
What’s a dislocated finger?
reducing possible entrapment of pulley system
What’s trigger finger?
swollen synovium in pulley
Where does the radial artery loop around?
thumb
