Gustatory Flashcards
What kinds of receptors are used in the gustatory sense?
Chemoreceptors
We use smell to _____,that’s why it can be hard to taste with a cold.
taste
What is a taste bud?
An oval structure in the epithelium of the tongue- have a gustatory pore to surface
We have 4,000 and they are microscopic and mostly on the tongue
What three types of cells compose taste buds?
Gustatory Receptor Cell
Support Cell
Basal Cell
What is a gustatory receptor cell?
Banana-shaped cell with tufts of microvilli that are known as gustatory hairs
What do gustatory hairs project through?
These hairs project from the gustatory pore
Are gustatory receptor cells neurons?
No,hese cells are derived from epithelium and live for 7-10 days
What is a gustatory support cell?
Banana shaped, but without gustatory hairs. Lie between the gustatory cells
What is a gustatory basal cell?
Replace gustatory cells every 7-10 days
What is a papillae?
4 different types of “bumps” found on the tongue
What are the 4 types of gustatory papillae?
Filiform
Fungiform
Circumvallate
Foliate
What is a filiform papillae?
The most numerous
Rarely have taste buds on them, because the filiform papillae is too thin
Thread-like structures that cover the anterior ⅔ of tongue
What is a fungiform papillae?
Mushroom-like in shape and have taste buds only at the top
What is a circumvallate papillae?
“Raised islands with moats”
Are 12 in the posterior tongue
Lined up in an upside-down “V” shape
What is a foliate papillae?
“Leaf-like”
4-5 folds on the side of the tongue
These contain the most sensitive taste buds
