Gustation: Anatomy of the Tongue Flashcards
Where is the Foliate Papillae located and what is it responsible for?
Located on the sides of the tongue seen as elongated structures, and is suspected to be responsible for milk detection in early development
What is papillae, and where is it located?
Papillae are taste-sensitive structures seen as small projections scattered about the surface of the tongue, shaped like ridges, pimples, or mushrooms.
What papillae are seen as ridges?
Foliate papillae
What papillae are seen as pimples?
Vallate papillae
What papillae are seen as mushroom in shape?
Fungiform papillae
About how many taste receptors (taste cells) are found on each taste bud?
50-150
*they are arranged inside the bud like the slices in an orange
About what percentage of the tongue epithelium is comprised of taste cells?
1% of tongue epithelium is comprised of taste cells
Where are basal cells in a taste cell?
at the base of taste cells, before the gustatory afferent axons.
About how many taste buds does a person typically have?
2000-5000
Where are the Vallate papillae and what do they look like?
The largest and most posterior papillae shaped in a V- located on the sulcus terminalis
What is the Surface anatomy of the tongue?
Superior to the mandible, trachea, larynx, and epiglottis
Inferior to the nose and upper part of maxilla
The sulcus terminalis separates the anterior 2/3 of tongue to the posterior 1/3.
What are taste buds called, and where are they concentrated?
Fungiform papillae
*generally concentrated in the anterior two thirds of the tongue
What taste buds are located on the sulcus terminalis?
Circumvallate papillae
What are filiform papillae?
taste buds which are conical and aligned in a lines throughout the tongue surface and cause friction for eating
What other parts of the digestive system have taste buds other than the tongue?
epiglottis
pharynx (primarily oropharynx)
a small portion of the laryngopharynx
