Greitemeyer, Hollingdale + Traut-Mattausch MUSIC + MISOGYNY Flashcards
What is the aim of the paper?
Test if exposure to music with pro-equality, relative to neutral, lyrics is causally associated w/ positive attitudes + behaviour towards women
What are the 2 theoretical models for the influence of media on behaviour?
- GAM - General aggression Model
2. GLM - General Learning Model
What is the General Aggression Model?
- dispositional + situational factors influence behavioural outcomes through the internal states of cognitions, affect + arousal that they evoke
EG: Exposure to violent media may evoke aggressive behaviour vis priming of aggressive thoughts
What is the difference between GAM and GLM?
GLM addressed exposure to violent + non-violent media
- depending on context can have negative/ positive effects
- considered not just aggressive video increasing aggression but also exposure to pro-social vid increases pro-social outcomes + decrease aggression
What are the differences between E1, E2, E3 and E4?
E1: effects of exposure to pro-equality lyrics vs non and how it affects sexual harassment judgements + attitudes toward women
E2: to what extent ppt endorsed adversarial sexual beliefs, acceptance of interpersonal violence + satisfaction w. own sex role
E3: used an objective behavioural measure that is related to the issue of gender equality
E4: examining the effects of music with pro-female behaviour
What was the procedure of E1?
- Proqeuality vs neutral
- Brief Mood Introspection Scale
- Sexual harassment judgements
- empathy with victim
- punishment of the professor - Attitude towards women measured
- To what extent the songs were about respect, equality _ misogyny
- Indicated liking for songs
What were the results of E1?
- pro-equality =
- more empathy for victim
- more positive attitudes toward women - No difference for punishment for professor
What was the procedure of E2?
- Pro-equality vs neutral music
- Attitude towards women
- Adversial sexual belifes
- own sex role satisfaction
- indicated liking of the songs
- judged extent to which the songs were about gender equality
- `mood + arousal
What were the findings of E2?
- Pro-equality = fewer adversarial sexual beliefs
- Female = fewer adversarial sexual beliefs
- Pro-equality + female
= less accepting of interpersonal violence
= more satisfied w/ own sex role vs neutral - Pro-equality + male = less satisfaction w/ own sex role
What was the procedure of E3?
- pro-equality vs neutral condition
- Song ratings
- Flyer given to them related to supporting women’s rights
What were the findings of E3?
- pro-equality = more likely to take a flyer
What were some limitations of E3?
- did not assess whether ppt indeed joined + supported the organisation
- No flyer for a non-women related pro-social organisation
What was the procedure of E4?
- Pro-equality vs neutral
- BMIS - mood + arousal
- An applicant for research assistant
- sophie vs steven
- competitive position - Asked
- recommend them?
- competent?
- likably? - Evaluation of songs about gender equality
What were the results of E4?
- Pro-equality + female = judged candidate more positively vs neutral + female
- Pro-quality = not more likely to recommend the male student vs neutral
= specific to female target?
= context of lyrics drives effect?
What are some limitations of the study?
- sole use of college students
- short-term effect only measures
- simple priming vs genuine change in opinion - Could examine dispositional variables
