Metaphor?
A comparison of two objects or ideas that do not use ‘like’ or ‘as’
Simile?
A comparison of two unlike things using the words ‘like’ or ‘as’
Narrative point of view?
The relation between the author and the characters (who’s telling the story)
First person?
The point of view in which the author speaks as if he/she is the main character (I couldn’t help her/after we talked we went out)
Second person?
The act of the author talking to a character
You aren’t that kind of of person/ you spoke to her
Third person?
Regular narrative with author using ‘he/she/it’
How many types of third person views are there? And what are they?
- Omniscient
- Limited
- Objective
Omniscient?
The act of the author switches to multiple characters point of views
Limited?
Only stick to the main characters pont of view and only know what they know
Objective?
You may only observe the characters you can not read their thoughts
Conflict?
Important to plot
Any situation that may cause the main character to struggle, there may be many throughout at story
What are the 2 types of Conflict?

External conflict?
A struggle with a force outside one’s self
Internal conflict?
A struggle within one’s self
What are the 4 types of external Conflicts?

Human vs human?
Main character struggles with their physical strength agains another
Human vs fate?
The main character struggles against fate or life’s circumstances
Human vs society?
The main character struggles against the customs of others
Human vs nature?
The main character struggles with nature (weather)
What the only type of internal conflict?
Human vs self

An action, setting, and/or object with a symbolic meaning
Irony?
A difference between what’s expected and what actually occurs (an ambulance ran over someone)

An effect in which the viewers understand the situation but the characters do not (Romeo and Juliet)
Personification ?
Putting characteristic to an inanimate object (flower dancing through the grass)
Allusion?
A reference to well known person, event, place, art piece, and/or a literal figure
Imagery?
That language that describes something using the 5 senses
Oxymoron?
Putting two contradictory words together

Rhyming sounds within phrases or sentences

A minor characters situation or action that effects the main character

Something that give bits and pieces hat hint to whats going to happen without spoiling it

Words that exaggerate a certain point to an overemphasized state
(Its been like 3 hours, when its only been 30 mins or “im so hungry I could eat a horse”
Onomatopoeia ?
Words that describe a sound (boom, pow, snap, bang)
Pathos?
A quality that invokes sadness within the viewers
Rhetoric?
Certain questions that are persuasive but may not be answered
Iambic pentameter ?
A phrase made with a syllable followed by a longer phrase with a syllable (But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks?)

The overall feeling within a story or play
Theme?
The universal idea or meaning that the author is trying to convey

The weather, social condition, time and location taking place in a story or play

A literary theory that focuses on the viewer’s experiences while reading/watching a type of literary work
Soliloquy?
An internal thought of a character spoken aloud to no apparent listener or themselves
Aside?
A brief set of words spoken by the characters to him/herself when other characters are present, without them hearing

Verb?
A word to express an action, event, or states of being
