Grade 10 Science - Naming Ions Flashcards
What method do you use to write the formulas for compounds?
The ‘criss-corss’ rule
What is the ‘Criss-Cross’ method?
When you swap the charges of 2 elements and then put them together
How do you write the name of each iconic compound when given the formula?
You put the metal first then you put the gas and change the ending to ‘ide’
When do you add roman numeral between the metal and the gas/polyatomic ions?
When the metal is a multivalent ionic compound?
What’s the difference between a metal ionic compound and a multivalent ionic compound?
Metal ionic compound only have 1 possible charge while multivalent ionic’s have multiple possible charges
How do you know what to write in for the roman numerals?
It’s basically the number needed to make both the metal and the gas/Polyatomic ions opposite charges when multiplied
How do you convert a compound name with/without roman numeral to the proper formula?
If it has a roman numeral you put the number after the gas/polynomial ionic. If it doesn’t then you check the charges of both metal and gas/polynomial and multiply either the metal or the gas/polynomial in order to make both have opposite charges
What is the only polynomial ion that can be combined with other polynomial ions and why?
Ammonium because it’s the only polynomial that has a positive charge
What does HOBrFINCl
- Hydrogen
- Oxygen
- Bromine
- Fluorine
- Iodine
- Nitrogen
- Chlorine
What is the acronym for the 7 special elements?
HOBrFINCl
What makes the elements in HOBrFINCl so specials?
because when they are alone they are in pair of 2
