Glucocorticosteroids - 4 Flashcards
Cortisone
cheap; converted to hydrocortisone (active)
-serious mineralocorticoid effects, seldom used
Cortisol
use in emergency and replacement
Corticosterone
not used
Prednisolone
- systemic anti inflammatory; immune suppressant
- also for allergic skin reactions and ophthalmic diseases
Prednisone
inactive form of prednisolone
Methylprednisolone
- anti inflammatory and immune supressant
- less water retention
Triamcinolone
-more toxic; anti inflammatory and immune suppressant
Dexamethasone
most potent anti inflammatory and immune suppressive
- used for cerebral oedema and ACTH suppression (no water retention)
- also for severe muscle and joint pain
Betamethasone
very potent anti inflammatory and immune suppressant
- used for cerebral oedema and ACTH suppression
- also used for severe muscle and joint pain
Beclomethasone
Topical and inhalation
Budenoside
Topical and inhalation
Mechanism of action
- binds to corticosteroid binding protein in cytoplasm
- binds to receptor - transcription of new genes
- produces LIPOCORTIN polypeptide
Cushing’s syndrome
moon face, striae, buffalo hump, thinning of skin, easy bruising, poor wound healing, susceptible to infection, ankle oedema
Side effects
CNS, glaucoma, skin, muscle and bone atrophy, hyperglycaemia, sodium retention, potassium loss, bleeding stomach ulcers.
