Indications for Glucagon?
Altered LOC with hypoglycemia, reversal agent in beta blocker and calcium channel blocker overdoses
Mechanism of action for Glucagon?
Increases blood glucose level by stimulating glycogenolysis. Unknown mechanism of stabilizing cardiac rhythm in beta blocker overdose. Decrease gastric motility and secretions.
The two contraindications of Glucagon
Hypersensitivity and hyperglycemia
Adverse effects of Glucagon
Dizziness, headache, hypertension, tachycardia, nausea, vomiting, rebound hypoglycemia
Precautions for Glucagon
Not effective if patient does not have any
Stored glycogen
Dose and administration of Glucagon for an adult with hypoglycemia?
1.0 mg IM, may be repeated in 10 minutes
What is the dose of Glucagon for a pediatric Pt with hypoglycemia?
0.03 – 0.1 mg/kg IM/IO/SQ/SIVP may be repeated in 20 minutes.
Dose and administration of Glucagon for an adult with Ca and Beta blocker overdose?
3-10 mg slow IVP followed by a 3-10 mg/hour infusion
Dose and administration of Glucagon for a pediatric Pt with Ca and Beta blocker overdose?
0.05 - 0.15 mg/kg IV/IO over 3-5 minutes, followed by a 0.05-0.10 mg/kg/h infusion as necessary.
