Carbohydrate, anti hypoglycemic
Indications of D50
Hypoglycemia, altered level of consciousness, coma of unknown origin, seizure of unknown origin, status epilepticus.
Mechanism of D50
Rapidly increases serum glucose levels. Short-term osmotic diuresis
Contraindications of D50
Intracranial hemorrhage (Traumatic or Stroke) Hyperglycemia
Adverse effects of D50
Extravasation leads to tissue necrosis, pain and burning from IV infusion, hyperglycemia
Precautions of D50
Hypertonic solution will cause tissue necrosis
If infiltration of the IV occurs
Adult dose and admin for hypoglycemia
12.5-25 grams of a 50% solution SIVP. May be repeated as necessary.
Pedi dose for 1 yr or older with hypoglycemia
0.5-1 g/kg of a 25% solution SIVP. May be repeated as necessary.
