Drug class of Plavix
Anti-platelet
Plavix’s mechanism of action
Inhibits platelet aggregation by blocking activation of the glycoprotein IIb/IIIa complex. This reduces platelet aggregation.
Indications for Plavix
ST elevation Mi, moderate-to high-risk non-ST elevation MI, Acute Coronary Syndrome, substitute for Aspirin. Post MI and Post stent placement.
Contraindications of Plavix
Active GI bleeding, Hypersensitivity,
Intracranial hemorrhage
Adverse Effects of Plavix
GI hemorrhage, cerebral hemorrhage, angioedema, flulike symptoms, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP)
Precautions for Plavix
Nexium and Prilosec (proton pump inhibitors)
May inhibit the effects of Plavix
Dose and admin for Plavix
300 to 600 mg loading dose p.o.
Then 75 mg daily p.o.
Pediatric: Not recommended
