What is cholangitis?
infection of the common bile duct - usually resulting from a common bile duct stone
What could enterococcus found in the blood signal?
endocarditis
What antibiotic causes a C. diff infection?
cephalosporin
What is sepsis?
uncontrolled amplification of the immune response throughout the whole body
- life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection
What is septic shock?
subset of sepsis with circulatory and cellular/metabolic dysfunction associated with a higher risk of mortality
What is spontaneous peritonitis?
intact abdomen and gut, translocation across a boggy bowel into the ascites
What is secondary peritonitis?
spontaneous burst (the bacteria are introduced)
What is the drug of choice for sepsis and enterococci in the gi tract?
Amoxicillin
Apart from amoxicillin, what drug is also effective against enterococci?
vancomycin
What is the drug of choice for sepsis and coliforms in the gi tract?
gentamicin
What is the drug of choice for sepsis and anaerobes in the gi tract?
Metronidazole
What is the back up drug if any of the others are contraindicated?
Co-trimoxazole
