- The work of Gregor Mendel (the father of genetics)
- Genetic:
- The study of heredity.
- Every living thing ‘inherits’ a set of characteristics from its parent(s).
- Mendel’s Pea Plants:
- Produce large number of offspring.
- Reproduce sexually.
- Can be artificially cross-pollinated.
- Removed the pollen-bearing male part of a plant to prevent self-pollination.
- He then brushed pollen from one plant onto the flower of another.
- Insects do this when they eat nectar and pollen gets stuck on them and then brushes off on another plant.
- Have several contrasting characters.
- Tall vs. short
- Color vs. short
- Pea shape
- Wrinkled vs. smooth
