Cell Structure and Function - Endosymbiosis Flashcards
1
Q
endosymbiosis
A
- a mutually beneficial relationship within a cell.
- Mitochondria and Chloroplasts were at one time small prokaryotes that began living inside larger cells.
- Over time the cells began working together beneficially and eventually became one organism.
- They “got inside” a eukaryotic cell by first being a parasite or as a prey item for the larger cell.

Q
mitochondria and chloroplasts
A
- Mitochondria are found in all cells.
- Chloroplasts are found in photosynthetic cells.
These organelles contain their own DNA and ribosomes. - Ribosomes are smaller than the cellular ribosomes.
- DNA is more similar to the DNA in prokaryotic cells.
- Double-membraned: both have an outer membrane and an inner membrane system including:
- Cristae in Mitochondria
- Thylakoids and grana in Chloroplast
