Carbon Compounds - Lipids Flashcards
1
Q
lipids
A
- large molecules generally not soluble to water, made mostly from carbon and hydrogen atoms with a little bit of oxygen
2
Q
fats
A
- main function is to store energy
- saturated all of the carbon binding sites have a hydrogen bond to it
- from animals
3
Q
oils
A
- unsaturated not all the available binding sites are filled
- from plants
4
Q
phospholipids
A
- structurally similar to fats, but they form an important part of the cell membrane
- form a phospholipid bilayer because of two parts of the phospholipid and their hydrophilic heads and hydrophodic tails
5
Q
steriods
A
- vary in structure and function
- ex. testosterone (male sex hormone), estrogen (female sex hormone), cholesterol (good and bad)
